Do You Eat When Boredom Strikes?

I want to ask you a question… Did you just spend the last three nights in a row mindlessly munching in front of the television? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone.

Boredom is one of the most common causes of overeating. SO many of us are drawn to the fridge the minute we have a little downtime. Does that describe you? If you eat because you can’t find anything else to do, then you’re sabotaging yourself.

So, you may be thinking, “Is there good news here?” Well, part of your work is already done; you’ve identified boredom eating as a problem. But that was the past. Focus on the present. Today is a new day and NEW YOU! Take the time to think ahead and come up with ways to combat every potentially sabotaging situation. A good example is, if food commercials on television make you hungry and/or drive you to snack uncontrollably, record or TiVo your shows so that you can skip those tempting commercials. It is more fun to watch without commercials anyway, don’t you agree? Or, get up and walk around during the commercials to get more steps on your pedometer until the commercials are over. (That’s what I do)

Losing weight isn’t about making willpower an overwhelming new personality trait; it’s about changing your everyday behavior. You can do this. I believe in you. If you want accountability, contact me today for a free 20 minute consultation. Beverly@beverlymonical.com

    Beverly,
This happens more than I care to admit. It’s something I watch for more than ever now. It can creep up on you so easily.
    Thanks,
    Val

Hi Beverly, fortunately I never get bored. I’ve got a lot to keep me occupied. When I do eat snacks etc, I tend to eat fruit which I love.

    Thanks Beverly!

Excellent post, Beverly! So many people beat themselves up by saying they don’t have enough will power, when actually they need to change their beliefs before they change their behavior.

When people want to lose weight, they need positive activities to replace the habit they are breaking. I find that boredom is a trigger for many habits. It’s important to find those triggers and replace them with new behaviors.

Your advice will help many people who overeat and don’t know what to do to get out of the cycle.

    Take care,
    Larry

Nice Strategy!!! I too suffer from the “snack attack syndrome”, good thing is I’ve created a short-term tactic to combat the excessive snacking. Since realizing my constant snacking, especially when boredom kicks in, I’ve started changing the food/snacks I buy when I go food shopping. Lots of granola, fruits, berries, nut and the such. I’ve replaced the “fatty” snacks with more “healthy” snacks.

    Thanks,

That’s awesome Dewane! I saw a great idea recently for snacks for children.Take the small snack ziplock baggies and put carrots, celery, popcorn, any healthy snack in them and place them where your children know that is their choice at snack time.I really liked that for portion control as well as healthier choices.
      Thanks for stopping by.

I’m never bored and when I don’t have anything to do, I still have lots to think about. Whenever I have any downtime the television does not tempt me. I don’t even have one. So I should be slim and trim, right? Well, being a bookworm, I prefer the company of a book that interests me and while I read, I eat… usually a meal I would be eating anyway. So that keeps me somewhat balanced… speaking of my physical waistline and the waistline of my mind.

Do your best to incorporate walking into your daily regimen. Walk on a treadmill and read at the same time.Physical exercise will help keep the waistline smaller.
