Okay, I know I don’t need to tell you that exercise is absolutely crucial to getting and staying healthy. Still, I can’t tell you how many people tell me that they aren’t working out because they are afraid they’ll look stupid, they fear trying something new, or, they say “I just don’t have time in my busy schedule”. These are fears or excuses you NEED to get over. Your attitude creates your reality, so it’s crucial to have the right one. The power is in your mind, so if you have negative thoughts about your self-image, if you lack confidence, or if you feel hopeless that you’ll ever lose weight, you’re still at square one. If you constantly tell yourself you’re not capable of working out or you are “TOO BUSY” then you’re always going to feel stupid…and eventually you’ll give up. But if you harness your mental power with positive thoughts that you CAN do this, and WILL do this, guess what — you will. Your health is important. Without it you have no life. Ever been to a nursing home…

If working out is new to you, empower yourself with knowledge If you’ve set your mind to do it, get the skills and you’ll feel more comfortable. Start off by hiring a personal trainer or looking online for some great tips. Doing it home first is the most basic way of getting the moves down before you try them in a public setting. OR…. just exercise at home to save time and also money.

Gyms have the best equipment and if you’re terrified of going to the gym, do it anyway. I understand that a gym can be a bit overwhelming the first time you go. But trust me, everyone has a first time stepping through those doors. Everybody has felt weird about lifting the weights in front of the muscle men, moving on the elliptical for the first time, or even signing up for a class. If you’re worried about what you like to other people there, forget it. People are so concentrated what they’re doing, in all likelihood they’re not paying ANY attention to you. If you’re still worried about it, go at a time when the machines are less crowded or meet for a session with a trainer (many gyms offer free introductory training sessions). The important thing is to know that feeling of intimidation will fade. Never be a quitter.

Also don’t let your age keep you from starting. As we age we lose muscle even more. To keep from getting frail as we age keep your muscles strong with exercising now! Check this 71 year old DIVA.

As you keep working out and becoming stronger, you will become aware of your strength — not just in the gym, but in other aspects of your life. Trust me, this will be a major boost to your confidence level and it will change your frame your mind for the better. It’s all baby steps, but they make a big difference over time. Keep working out, stop feeling stupid, and start feeling great!

The magic question; Does size matter or is it what you weigh that is most important?

Are you always weighing yourself regularly? Are you trying to get to that magic number on the scale? When you hit it, then are you freaking out when it goes up a pound or two and you have not eaten too much and you are still being very active and exercising?
Women are usually worse than men about the dreaded “Number on the Scales.” This post is to help you “FORGET ABOUT IT”!

Let me ask you this question and I want an honest answer. If you were 5’2” tall and weighed 125 pounds but wore an easy size 2, do you think you would look good? You may be thinking that isn’t possible….but I am here to tell you it is!

These numbers belong to a person I know. She looks awesome because she has muscle not FAT!
Muscle is lean and heavier than fat. Muscle makes you look smaller and fat makes you look larger. You take a person that has muscle and little fat and compare them to another of the same height and weight but has more fat, that person will look heavy in comparison.

The number on the scales should never be your goal. A certain dress size should be your goal. If your clothes fit better or more loose you are making progress no matter what the scales say.

Exercise 30 minutes to an hour each time and at least 6 days a week. Make sure cardio is 30 minutes or more and incorporate weight lifting or using Bodylastic bands for resistance training. (bands are not expensive and you can use them at home and travel with them) I recommend Bodylastics because of the quality and price. There is a link on Recommend Resources at www.totalwellnesstv.com if you would like to get your own set.

Normally I would not recommend a product to assist you in losing inches. I would tell you to just work hard, eat a low glycemic diet and eventually your goals will be met. But…I am going to recommend one product because it promotes “Fat Loss” AND it really works well with no side effects. You can hear my Fat Loss participants on my WebTV Show talk about how it is working for them.

REMEMBER: Throw out the scales at your house today and concentrate on the measuring tape or just how much better or much looser your clothes are fitting you.

If you like this, I would appreciate you sharing it with your friends.

Do you know somebody that eat anything and everything and has trouble keeping the weight on? I do and I am so jealous of them because I have to work at maintaining my weight and not gaining. Why do some people have that wonderful fast metabolism? You may be thinking, “Can I get mine like that?” You probably want to blame your parents for passing along bad genes. Genes are a piece of the puzzle….BUT it is the CHOICES you make every day that are to blame. You must take responsibility for yourself because no one else can.

When we Starve ourselves, Dehydrate ourselves, Exhaust ourselves, Eat processed foods, surround ourselves with toxins every day, all these choices influence the way our body processes food, burns calories and regulates our weight. How do you change it? To learn how to manipulate our biochemistry to our benefit, we have to understand how our hormones have already been manipulated to our detriment. Here are some of the ways.

Too many Yo-Yo diets: Instead of maintaining a stable weight, you’ve developed a frustrating up-and-down weight-loss pattern. You’ve repeatedly gone on extreme diets and lost weight, then, you’ve slipped back into your old ways of eating and regained that weight. Sound familiar???

Too many of the same foods, all processed: You’ve consumed so many processed foods that your body doesn’t recognize as real food — because they’re not!

Too many lazy years: You’ve spent a lot of time on the couch. Don’t blame your lagging metabolism just because you never exercised.

Too many pesticides in our food: Some farmers spray harmful pesticides on our food, and you’ve chosen those over organic foods.

Too many toxins in our environment: More than 100,000 synthetic chemicals have been registered for commercial use — with 2,000 more added each year — but very few of them have been tested adequately for toxicity. Exposure Overload to many synthetic chemicals in products in and around your home.

Too many bad bugs — and not enough good ones: Do you use hand sanitizers all the time to rid yourselves of pests? This is pointless and not beneficial for the healthy functioning of your immune system.

Too many hours at work — and not enough in bed: You’ve let yourself get stressed out. Stress is like kryptonite for your hormones — even just a bit of it can throw them entirely out of whack. Healthy adults need 7-8 hours of daily sleep.

Too many pharmaceuticals — even in our water: You’ve taken prescriptions dashed off by your doctor and haven’t always checked out how they might interact with certain herbs, vitamins, or other supplements or prescriptions. All these pharmaceuticals could have a serious impact on your hormonal health. Remember your body is a well balanced Chemical Factory when treated correctly.

Too many cigarettes: You’ve ignored all the medical findings on the damage smoking can cause. Smoking negatively impacts endocrine glands, which produce hormones, in addition to pretty much every cell in your body. Why do people still start smoking???

Yes, there is no denying that we are struggling with an environment that conspires to make and keep us fat. But you have the power to do something about it! You need to realize that your metabolism and hormones can start working for you again — just clean up your act with a healthy home and healthy eating, and you’ll be able to tip the balance toward staying naturally skinny.
Will it be easy? Nothing is easy but it is a choice we all can make for ourselves.

Where do you want to be with your health in a year? Are you willing to make the necessary changes to meet that goal? Do you need help?
Melissa Bierman and Beverly Monical (me) will be starting another Fat Loss Accountability Class in March. Apply today by calling Beverly- 336-430-7393 or Melissa- 847-431-4055 for details. Also check out our WebTV Show at http://www.totalwellnesstv.com .

Could the simple act of keeping track of your food intake help you lose weight? The answer is YES, according to a study that found keeping a food diary may actually double a person’s weight loss.

“The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost”, said the lead author Jack Hollis,Ph.D., a researcher at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research in Portland ,Oregon. “Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those that kept no records. It seems the act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories”.

These findings were published in the August ’08 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
In addition to keeping these journals they had to turn them in at weekly support meetings. ACCOUNTABILITY!

What is the best way to keep a food journal? There are many food logs available for downloading. I actually like this site www.thedailyplate.com .You can register and keep your food intake along with your exercises. It will keep a record of your calories eaten and subtract when you exercise. Great site!

Another good site is www.hungry-girl.com . This blog site gives some great information about eating and calories.
Are you into texting? Go to this site, http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/mobile.php and follow the directions. You can get information texted to your phone about the basic nutritional value of food at most restaurants.
The main thing I want you to get out of this article is losing weight requires changes and better choices. These tools I shared with you are just that, TOOLS. You have to make the effort and make the changes to meet your weight loss goals.

If you are looking for accountability as well as certified weight loss coaches, check out Melissa Bierman and me, Beverly Monical, at www.totalwellnesstv.com . Our next Fat Loss Show begins in March. Be watching for details soon.

How do you stop a child from being overweight?
It all begins with education for the parents so they can pass it on to their children. Then the parents have to make the correct choices for their family. If the parents are Obese then the apple usually doesn’t fall far from the tree. Children will do as their parents do unless they have others that can influence their decisions.

Watch this short montage I created to help parents think about making better and healthier changes for their family. Comments are welcome and appreciated!

The upcoming year of 2010 can be a great year for you, if you decide what it is you want and you make a real commitment to achieving what you want by taking consistent daily action towards realizing your desires.

This time each year, I compose a list of clearly detailed goals. The experts say that once a goal is clearly defined in writing, it is 10 times more likely to be realized. I find that this simple task immediately generates a surge of motivation and energy to start taking action to reach those goals. Therefore, I challenge you to spend 10 minutes writing down 3 to 5 goals.

Goal setting and achieving is powerful but most people miss the boat. Why? According to Napoleon Hill, Brian Tracy and Tony Robins there are many reasons why people miss the boat when it comes to goals setting and achieving. Here are the top 2 reasons why people don’t set goals.
1.	Most people don’t know the importance goal setting.
2.	Most people don’t know how to set goals.

Goal Setting 101
1.	Clearly define your goals in writing. Yes, nearly 100% of people have some sort of goals floating around in their head, but only 3 to 5% actually write them down. It’s no wonder why most people never get what they want; the subconscious doesn’t receive the message unless the eyes view it. When the subconscious mind is engaged, the conscious mind immediately goes to work unerringly towards the full attainment of your goals.
2.	Define your “Reasons” or your “Why”. Write your reasons why you desire each of your goals to become realized in your life. Simply list in writing why you want to lose weight, gain weight, prevent the onset of a disease and/or feel better. “Reasons are the fuel in your furnace of achievement” Your goals may change but your reasons why will not.
3.	Make a dated plan of accomplishment. A plan is simply a list of activities that each of your goals will require to become realized in your life. Goals must be time sensitive and a date of completion. A goal without a desired completion date is like a ship without a rudder. So give each goal a desired completion date and begin to plan out your strategy. A list of activities to get fit may have, taking control of your nutrition and eating habits, talking with a fitness expert, registering for 3-months of boot camp and/or group training, scheduling workouts on your calendar and NOT giving in to excesses or the blame game in 2010!
Once you have your goals clearly defined in writing now it’s time for you to take some action. If you are tired of being overweight, having low self confidence or not being able to fit into those “skinny jeans” then take action. You and only you can do this for you!

Deaths also more common among those with chronic diseases, study finds
Posted October 21, 2009 in US News & World Report

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 21 (HealthDay News) — People who are super obese and those with the most chronic health problems face an increased risk for dying within a year after weight-loss surgery, a new U.S. study has found.
The research involved 856 men and women who had bariatric (weight-loss) surgery at 12 Veterans Affairs medical centers between 2000 and 2006. They averaged 54 years old and had an average body-mass index (BMI) of 48.7. BMI is a measurement based on height and weight, and a BMI of 40 or greater is considered class 3 or morbid obesity.
About 36 percent of the group was considered super obese, with a BMI of 50 or higher. In addition, 8 percent also had such chronic diseases as diabetes and heart disease.
During the follow-up, 54 people died, including 1.3 percent who died within 30 days of their surgery, 2.1 percent who died within 90 days of surgery and 3.4 percent who died within a year, the study found.
Those who were super obese and those with co-existing chronic diseases had the highest risk for early death. Super obese people accounted for 30 of the 54 deaths and had 30-day, 90-day and one-year death rates of 2 percent, 3.6 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively. People with co-existing health problems had death rates of 1.5 percent after 30 days, 5.8 percent after 90 days and 10.1 percent at one year.
The chances of dying after bariatric surgery may be greater for people who are super obese, according to the researchers, because the added abdominal fat makes the procedure more difficult, wound complications and blood clotting are more likely and they’re more apt to have obesity-related illnesses.
“The results of this study should inform discussions with patients with regard to the potential risks and benefits of bariatric surgery,” wrote co-author Dr. David Arterburn, of Group Health Research Institute in Seattle, and his colleagues in their report, published in the October issue of Archives of Surgery.
“These findings also suggest that the risks of bariatric surgery in patients with significant comorbidities, such as congestive heart failure, complicated diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, should be carefully weighed against potential benefits in older male patients and those with super obesity,” they concluded.

This article really jumped out at me. Surgery to lose weight is not the answer. Many obese people have been successful in losing their weight the safe and old fashion way, “Change of food intake and exercise”. Notice I did not say diet and exercise. That word diet seems to shut many minds down, especially those with lots to lose. A diet usually means doing without “all that food you love”. Depriving yourself completely from these foods will set you up to fail.

If you are ready to set goals, make changes in your daily routine, and just do whatever it takes to lose those unwanted pounds I can help you accomplish it. An accountability coach, like me, can get you where you want to be. You should have a coach you can relate to as well as one that will motivate you.

Leading By Example

Many kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console. The busy family’s lifestyles have fewer free moments to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals. From fast food to electronics, quick and easy is the reality for many people in the new millennium.
The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate, with 1 out of 3 kids now considered overweight or obese.

Preventing children from becoming overweight means adapting the way your family eats and exercises, and how you spend time together. Getting the parents to make wiser choices and decisions for the family’s well being needs to be handled first. Helping children lead healthy lifestyles begins with parents who lead by example.

Let’s talk about BMI, Body Mass Index. To calculate BMI, divide weight in kg by height in meters squared; for pounds and inches, divide weight by height squared and multiply the result by the conversion factor 703.

Once you know your child’s BMI, it can be plotted on a standard BMI chart. Kids fall into one of four categories:
1.underweight: BMI below the 5th percentile
2.normal weight: BMI at the 5th and less than the 85th percentile
3.overweight: BMI at the 85th and below 95th percentiles
4.obese: BMI at or above 95th percentile

BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat and can be misleading in some situations. For example, a muscular person may have a high BMI without being overweight (because extra muscle adds to a body weight — but not fatness). In addition, BMI may be difficult to interpret during puberty when kids are experiencing periods of rapid growth. It’s important to remember that BMI is usually a good indicator — but is not a direct measurement — of body fat.

The Effects of Obesity

Obesity increases the risk for serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol — all once considered exclusively adult diseases. Obese kids also may be prone to low self-esteem that stems from being teased, bullied, or rejected by peers.
These children are at risk for developing medical problems that affect their present and future health and quality of life.

Cardiovascular risk factors present in childhood (including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes) can lead to serious medical problems like heart disease, heart failure, and stroke as adults. Preventing or treating overweight and obesity in children may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease as they get older.

Genetics also play a role — genes help determine body type and how your body stores and burns fat just like they help determine other traits. Genes alone, however, cannot explain the current obesity crisis. Because both genes and habits can be passed down from one generation to the next, multiple members of a family may struggle with weight.

People in the same family tend to have similar eating patterns, maintain the same levels of physical activity, and adopt the same attitudes toward being overweight. Studies have shown that a child’s risk of obesity greatly increases if one or more parent is overweight or obese. Again children follow their parents example. If you are obese and are reading this now, decide to stop being a poor example for your child.

The key to keeping kids of all ages at a healthy weight is taking a whole-family approach. It’s the “practice what you preach” mentality. Make healthy eating and exercise a family affair. Get your kids involved by letting them help you plan and prepare healthy meals, and take them along when you go grocery shopping so they can learn how to make good food choices.

	Don’t reward kids for good behavior or try to stop bad behavior with sweets or treats. Come up with other solutions to modify their behavior.
	Don’t maintain a clean-plate policy. Be aware of kids’ hunger cues. Even babies who turn away from the bottle or breast send signals that they’re full. If kids are satisfied, don’t force them to continue eating. Reinforce the idea that they should only eat when they’re hungry.
	Don’t talk about “bad foods” or completely eliminate all sweets and favorite snacks from kids’ diets. Kids may rebel and overeat these forbidden foods outside the home or sneak them in on their own

This is not new information but yet the rise of obesity in children is alarming. Parents must be proactive about their own health and their children will follow by example. Are you making good choices for your family. Let’s turn around this trend and stop Childhood Obesity today.
